Understanding Dimensional Weight
Carriers use DIM weight to charge for bulky lightweight items. All major carriers (DHL, FedEx, UPS) use a 5,000 cubic inch divisor: 1 pound billable weight per 5,000 cubic inches.
If DIM weight exceeds actual weight, you're charged for the higher DIM weight. This protects carriers from low-density shipments that take up valuable space.
Strategy: Reduce packaging dimensions to lower DIM weight. Use right-sized boxes and void-fill efficiently. Even 1-2 inches of padding difference can impact billable weight and cost.
